Plasmid DNA was loaded into reaction vessels with a minimal silicon dioxide coating at different concentrations (600ng/μL – 0.06ng/μL) corresponding to the total mass shown. Plasmid DNA was labeled in situ with ethidium bromide. Fluorescence was evident immediately and did not diminish, indicating that plasmid DNA is retained, and small molecules are able to traverse the membrane and react with the plasmid.
