Table 4.

Risk Factors for Death

Variable Odds Ratio
(95% Confidence Interval)
p – value
Patient age ≥ 55 years 3.7 (2.4 – 5.9) < 0.001
Traumatic brain injury AIS ≥ 3 3.4 (2.2 – 5.4) < 0.001
Base deficit 1.5 (1.2 – 1.8) < 0.001
Number of older units 0.9 (0.7 – 1.2) 0.69
Total number of units 1.4 (1.1 – 1.9) 0.007

The data are the result of forward stepwise logistic regression analysis in which the indicated variables remained in the final model. Continuous data are categorized into quartiles as follows: Base deficit: 0 – 3.1, 3.2 – 5.6, 5.7 – 8.9, ≥ 9. Number of older units: 0 – 1, 2 – 3, 4 – 6, ≥ 7. Total number of units: 1 – 3, 4 – 6, 7 – 11, ≥ 12. The total number of units of PRBCs transfused was associated with mortality but the number of older units was not.
