Table 6.

Risk Factors for Complicated Sepsis

Variable Odds Ratio
(95% Confidence Interval)
p – value
Patient age ≥ 55 years 2.2 (1.5 – 3.2) < 0.001
Male 1.5 (1.1 – 2.2) 0.02
Injury severity score 1.3 (1.1 – 1.4) 0.002
Total units transfused 1.5 (1.2 – 1.8) < 0.001
Number of older units transfused 0.01
2 – 3 units 0.9 (0.5 – 1.4) 0.52
4 – 6 units 1.0 (0.6 – 1.6) 0.87
≥ 7 units 1.9 (1.1 – 3.4) 0.03

The data are the result of forward stepwise logistic regression analysis in which the indicated variables were retained in the final model. Continuous data are categorized as follows: ISS: 4 – 17, 18 – 26, 27 – 33, ≥ 34. Total number of units: 1 – 3, 4 – 6, 7 – 11, ≥ 12. After adjustment for total number of units of PRBCs transfused, the number of older units was an independent risk factors for complicated sepsis.
