Antimicrobial and immunomodulatory functions of SPLUNC1. SPLUNC1 exerts antibacterial effects via inhibition of bacterial growth or inhibition of bacterial adhesion. Furthermore, SPLUNC1 enhances host defense against bacterial infection indirectly through increasing neutrophil activation. In turn, activated neutrophils participate in elimination of the microorganisms via release of neutrophil elastase.
