Mean intelligibility of words presented in noise for trained and control subjects. Trained, or experimental, subjects were trained with one set of talkers and tested with words produced by these familiar talkers. Control subjects were trained with one set of talkers and tested with words produced by a novel set of talkers. Percentage of correct word recognition is plotted at each signal-to-noise ratio.
