The gousiekte-inducing plants are part of the subfamily Ixoroideae, one of the three subfamilies in Rubiaceae. Nevertheless, they are not closely related as they belong to different tribes: Fadogia and Vangueria belong to Vanguerieae, while Pavetta belongs to Pavetteae. The respective tribes are indicated in capital letters.
