Vaginal rat model of infection. BPY40 and BPY41 were inoculated intravaginally at 107 yeast cells in 0.1 ml of saline solution for each C. glabrata strain tested. Each isolate was inoculated in five animals. The inoculum was dispensed into the vaginal cavity, and the number of cells in the vaginal fluid was counted. The rat was considered colonized when at least 1 CFU was present in the vaginal lavage fluid. CFU are means of three measurements. Asterisks indicate a statistically significant difference between CFU counts from each infected animal (***, P < 0.001).
