The luminal contents stimulate the ISNs which in turn activate excitatory motor neurons and inhibitory motor neurons. When activity in the excitatory motor neurons exceeds activity in the inhibitory motor neurons, there are contractions in the circular muscle. These contractions cause the release of serotonin from the mucosa which further stimulates the ISNs.
