Method for organizing individual cells in a microfluidic channel. (a) The microfluidic channel contains barriers that trap individual, nonadherent cells. These traps reduce the effect of shear forces that cells experience in a microfluidic channel. (b) An individual HL60 cell undergoing apoptosis over the course of 134 min. The cell was exposed to staurosporine, a cytotoxic reagent, and propidium iodide, which is impermeable to membranes and therefore reports on membrane integrity. Reprinted with permission from D.
