Each image was obtained using circularly polarized light and the 100-μm sections of unstained bone were embedded in polymethyl methacrylate. The images are obtained using the same magnification and illumination; each image is ca. 275 μm wide. It should be noted that the 12-point scores allow for the designation of hybrid osteons (e.g. 3, 5, 7, and 9 in the 12A-MTS).
