Pith choice assays with T. mucorea larvae given a choice of stems and pith of wild-type and different transformed lines of N. attenuata plants. Individual T. mucorea larvae were placed between two stem halves, one from a wild-type stem and a matching half from a transformed N. attenuata plant (see caption of Fig. 1 for abbreviations and Supplemental Fig. S1 for images of choice assay). The larvae’s choice of pith was determined after 24 h. Numbers in bars reflect replicate numbers. Larval choice was compared with Pearson’s χ²-test; significant differences between the lines are indicated by asterisks (* = P < 0.05; *** = P < 0.001).
