Scheme of the possible mechanisms of collagen refolding in the three CL/CC constructs CC-CL (A), CL-CC (B), and CC-CL-CC (C). In each case, step 1 depicts the CL domains undergoing thermal denaturation, and step 2 depicts their refolding. The constructs with a single CC domain (A and B) refold completely, whereas that with a CC at both ends folds incompletely. We posit that this is due to register mismatch when collagen assembly is nucleated from both ends.
