The ⁸⁶Rb⁺ uptake assay was performed as described in MATERIALS AND METHODS and the ouabain-sensitive ⁸⁶Rb⁺ flux was normalized to total protein. The bars indicate the SE of two independent determinations done in triplicates. (B) Determination of the intracellular Na⁺ levels by atomic emission spectrometry. The intracellular sodium concentrations were measured at 588.995 nm and normalized to the Mg²⁺ content of the cells. The error bars show the SE of the mean of two independent determinations.
