Representative photomicrographs of FosB/ΔFosB immunoreactivity within six brain areas that show comparative differences between non-defeated mice that received IL lesions before enrichment (ILx→EE) and defeated mice that received IL lesions before (ILx→EE→SD) or after (EE→ILx→SD) enriched housing. Lesions of IL cortex before EE nearly abolished FosB/ΔFosB immunostaining after SD in prefrontal cortical regions and facilitated FosB/ΔFosB immunostaining in the PVN. In contrast, mice that received IL lesions after EE then exposed to SD (EE→ILx→SD) show FosB/ΔFosB immunostaining in PFC and PVN similar to non-defeated lesion control groups (ILx→EE).
