A hierarchical model for cognitive control. The prefrontal cortex contains parallel topographies for the adaptive control of behavior. The dlPFC maintains and updates rules for behavior; as those rules become increasingly complex, progressively more anterior regions contribute to control processing. When the current environment changes (or exhibits volatility over time), regions of dmPFC shape the engagement of lateral prefrontal regions, based on the current type of environmental uncertainty.
