Policosanol inactivates HMG-CoA reductase in vitro. Phosphorylated HMG-CoA reductase in hepatoma cells was measured by immunoquantitation with an antibody specific for the phosphorylated protein after a 3-h treatment with 10–25 μg/ml of policosanol. AICAR and metformin (1 mM each) served as positive controls. Values represent the mean and standard deviation of three experiments.
