Distribution of old-growth forest (dark green fill) and secondary forest (light green stripe fill) in the mountain ranges of central China across 600 km of latitude. At regional scales there was a high degree of overlap between the two forest categories. At smaller local scales, the two forest categories were clustered in discrete patches (map inset: dark squares, old-growth forest 20 m × 20 m plots, light-green squares, secondary plots).
