Figure 6.

Figure 6.

Dynamics of OFC activity across learning on the start arm. The solid lines indicate the Z-scored firing rate (±SEM) for path-selective cells recorded before, during, and after learning. Only activity in the start arm is included. The blue lines indicate the activity of cells specific to paths rewarded at the beginning of the testing day (before paths); the red lines indicate activity of cells specific to paths rewarded at the end of the day (end paths). The gray bars indicate the probability of correct responses (Smith et al., 2004). SP1 and SP2 indicate the first and second blocks of 10 trials of stable performance in the previously rewarded task; post1 and post2 indicate the first and second blocks of 10 trials after the rat reached criterion in the new task. In all reversals (A) and in reversal 1 (B), numerals 1–4 indicate trials with the following ranges of correct response probabilities: 1, 0–0.25; 2, 0.25–0.5; 3, 0.5–0.75; 4, 0.75–1.0. Similar diagrams show firing rate changes during switch learning in all switches (C) and for switch 1 (D). The green lines indicate the Z-scored activity in the start arm for cells that were specific to the common path during strategy switching. For C and D, the following ranges of correct response probabilities are indicated: 1, 0–0.60; 2, 0.6–0.7; 3, 0.7–0.85; 4, 0.85–1.0. The asterisk (*) indicates a significant difference between that epoch and SP2 (Bonferonni corrected t test, p < 0.05).
