SMI-31 staining of intact axons in optic nerves at 1 week after topical administration of 1 or 1.5 M Mn²⁺. There was no obvious axonal damage of the optic nerve after topical administration of either 1 or 1.5 M Mn²⁺. The axonal counts were performed on the central 100 × 100 μm², and there was no significant difference in the axonal counts between the Mn²⁺-affected and control nerves.
