Despite the loss of GABAergic interneurons, the density of inhibitory boutons in SP and SLM was not altered with aging. Immunohistochemistry for inhibitory terminals in SP (A.) and SLM (B.) in area CA1 of young (n = 7) and aged (n = 7) rats, as indicated by GAD-67 terminal labeling, did not reveal any age-related difference (C.).
