Influence of medium, serum concentration and cell density on compaction of released collagen type I hydrogels seeded with neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts. Gels seeded with 5 × 105 cells were cultured with M199 media supplemented with 5% or 10% FBS for 120 h (panel A). Higher FBS concentrations attenuated the compaction for all time points. Panel B shows compaction of gels cultured with M199 + 10% FBS and seeded with different cell densities compared at three time points. Statistical comparisons were carried out using ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test with p<0.05 (*) indicating significant differences.
