Recovered strain fraction (θf−θi)/θi is measured as a function of initial, applied strain θi. The recovered strain fraction shows a power-law behaviour, decaying with initial strain to the −0.6 power. Topological rearragements (for example, domain slipping and neighbour swapping) and general viscoelastic deformations irreversibly lose elastic energy that would otherwise be stored while 'winding'.
