The open state corresponds to (X_I, X_O) = (1, 0) (circle on the left), the semi-closed state is (X_I, X_O) = (0.5, 0.5) (square) and the closed state (X_I, X_O) = (0, 1) (circle on the right). The open/closed states are two attractors and semi-closed state is a saddle. The water dynamics moves along the line X_O + X_I = 1. It tends to the open state when X_O > 0.5, and converges to the closed state when X_O < 0.5.
