Prostacyclin I2 (PGI2) given intravenously nonselectively dilates the pulmonary vasculature and may worsen ventilation/perfusion matching. In contrast, inhaled PGI2 may improve ventilation/perfusion matching by improving pulmonary blood flow to well-ventilated regions of the lung.
