Figure 6

Cos-1 cells were grown to 60% confluency in 6-well plates. Rz-553 encoding DNA (4 μg) was transfected by using Lipofectin (GIBCO/BRL) (B). Control cells were transfected with equal amounts of mutant-S1–553-Rz (A) and then infected with reovirus as described earlier. The cells were observed under an inverted microscope (Nikon Diaphot 300) and photographed. (A) Extensive cytopathic effects caused by reovirus infection when cells were transfected with equivalent amounts of the mutant-Rz. The S1–553-Rz-treated cells showed remarkable protection from cytopathogenesis caused by reovirus infection (B). These are representative pictures from three separate experiments that gave similar results.
