Metabolism of (n-3) and (n-6) fatty acids. LA and ALA are the parent (n-6) and (n-3) long-chain PUFA. LA is converted to AA and ALA is converted to EPA and DHA. AA-derived eicosanoids are proinflammatory, whereas EPA-derived ones are less so. EPA and DHA metabolites such as resolvins and protectins have important roles in the resolution of inflammation.
