Effect of bungarotoxin (Bung) or mecamylamine (Mecl) pretreatment (1 × 10−7 M for both) on NNK- and NNA (1 × 10−8 M for all)-induced changes in surfactant phospholipid and surfactant protein B synthesis in embryonic day 19 fetal rat lung explants. NNK-induced increase in surfactant phospholipid and SP-B was not blocked by either Bung or Mecl pretreatment (A), whereas NNA-induced increase in SP-B was blocked by either treatment and increase in surfactant phospholipid synthesis by only Mecl (B) (*P < 0.05 vs. control; #P < 0.05 vs. NNA; n = 6 for choline incorporation; n = 3 for Western blotting).
