The innumerable molecular determinants that contribute to tumor cell motility can be classified in one of five underlying principles. Cell autonomous migratory ability includes the intrinsic determinants that enable a cell to move. Soluble communication includes an autocrine and paracrine communication. Cell-Cell adhesion includes those determinants responsible for physical cell-cell adhesion and communication. Cell-matrix adhesion includes those determinants responsible adhesion to and migration on the ECM.
