A proposed model of POMCN1-ICD effects that impair levator muscle formation during eyelid development, leading to BPES-like phenotypes. Aberrantly high expression of N1-ICD causes activation of transcriptional repressor Hes-1 expression, which suppresses FoxL2 expression, which, in turn, downregulates α-SMA and thus leads to impaired levator muscle formation.
