The dashed line shows the large transient increase in the risk of MI associated with an isolated episode of vigorous exertion in sedentary subjects. The solid line shows that subjects who habitually exercise have a lower risk of MI while at rest and also a much smaller transient increase in risk associated with each episode of exercise.
