Comparative genomic survey results of Golgi-associated protein machinery across diverse eukaryotes. Most Golgi-associated machinery is ancient. This Coulsen plot shows the presence or absence distribution of the 11 Golgi-associated proteins examined across 21 eukaryotic genomes. The presence of a homolog, confirmed by reciprocal BLAST analysis, is shown by a filled pie sector. Nine of the factors show a wide eukaryotic distribution, with clear losses in the cases of both GRASP and p115. BARS and TANGO1 show restricted distribution and are likely recent innovations in animals.
