Top portion of the SQUID microscope. The SQUID, inside a vacuum enclosure, is mounted on a sapphire rod thermally connected to a liquid nitrogen reservoir (not shown). A 75-μm-thick sapphire window separates the vacuum chamber from atmosphere. The sample is contained in a Lucite holder, with a 3-μm-thick Mylar base, aligned against a positioning element.
