The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is regionally specialized, with the dorsolateral PFC regulating attention, the inferior lateral PFC in the right hemisphere being specialized for inhibition of inappropriate actions, and the ventromedial PFC allowing flexible and appropriate emotional responding.

This `top-down' regulation is carried out by extensive PFC projections to posterior cortical sensory cortices and to subcortical regions. Parallel loops through the basal ganglia and cerebellum are key for the planning and execution of appropriate movements, thoughts and emotions.
