(a) Schematic representation of the coplanar switching geometry with suspended BaTiO3 lamella on platinized MgO carrier with FIB patterned electrodes; the PFM cantilever is also illustrated. A DC switching voltage is supplied through wire bonds while PFM is performed in the interelectrode gap to enable imaging of the switched domain states. (b) Scanning electron microscope image of the real sample structure. The image has been colour coded to match the schematic in (a). (c) VPFM amplitude (top) and phase (bottom) images of the virgin state of the BaTiO3 lamella observed between the Pt electrodes (illustrated schematically).
