Effects of steady-state offsets imposed on an oscillating hair bundle. (A) Experimental records, where constant deflections were imposed on the bundle via a glass probe of stiffness 100 μN/m. (B) The corresponding numerical simulation. For offsets in the positive direction, the oscillations are faster and smaller and the quiescent intervals disappear. In the negative direction, however, the quiescent intervals occur more frequently and eventually become the dominant component of the oscillation profile.
