Aggregation as assessed by phase-contrast microscopy in PilW variants constructed in this study. The WT strain and the pilW mutant were included as positive and negative controls, respectively. Aggregates were observed after 2 h of growth under static conditions (×240 magnification). For the sake of clarity, only a few representative PilW variants constructed in this study are shown. Results for all of the strains are summarized in Table 2.
