Sex hormones or other mediators released from the testes (male gonads) increase inflammation in the heart following CVB3 infection by increasing proinflammatory GR1F4/80+ M1 and IL-1β+IL-10+ M2 macrophage populations, and by inhibiting regulatory populations like Tim-3+ M2 macrophages, Tim-3+ T cells, Th2 cells and Treg during acute CVB3-induced myocarditis.
