Table 1.

The Molecular Weight of Polymers 1–4.

Polymers 1H NMR SEC

na(Da) nb(Da) PDIb
1 4,700 6,070 1.42
2 5,220 7,400 1.38
3 5,200 7,420 1.35
4 5,288 7,500 1.30
a

The number-average molecular weight (n) was determined by 1H NMR.

b

(n) and polydispersity index (PDI) were measured by SEC; PDI is the ratio of weight-average molecular weight (w) and (n). The difference in the molecular weight obtained by SEC and 1H NMR is related to differences in the hydrodynamic volume of the polymer in chloroform compared to polystyrene standards. 1H NMR provides a more accurate method for average molecular weight determination.
