Orthotopic hepatic homografts in dogs with delayed mortality, (a, above) Dog No. 3, died of pneumonia and pulmonary edema 25 days postoperatively. A few mononuclear cells are in the portal area. (b) Dog No. 4, who died of a perforated gastric ulcer, pneumonia, and a pulmonary embolus, 31 days postoperatively. The areas of parenchymal loss in the lower field contain a few strands of fibrous tissue. Portal areas have small numbers of mononuclear cells. H & E stain (× 80).
