Up to this point, one vaccine has been used for each influenza strain so that 11 different vaccines are needed to cover the 11 strains shown in the figure. Today, using oil-in-water adjuvants such as MF59, it is possible to vaccinate against the 11 strains using only 3 or 4 vaccines. The dream for the future is to develop a universal vaccine able to protect from all strains.
