Normalized elasticity imaging (left panel) of a diseased loop (red circle) and normal loop (blue circle) in the same TNBS-treated rat. Upper right panel: Gross dissection of the colon. Ultrasound ROI are indicated in the proximal colon (A) and distal colon (B). The distal colon exhibits marked thickening and stiffness with a characteristic curling of the most distal end. Lower right panel: Histologic sections of representative areas of unaffected sigmoid (A) and affected distal colon (B) from the same animal. The elasticity images and the histologic sections were not precisely matched. Trichrome staining for collagen is shown in blue. Collagen (blue staining) is confined to a thin margin in the submucosal layer exhibits expansion of the smooth muscle layer with marked infiltration of collagen.
