Catalytic mechanisms of (a) the HDV and (b) glmS ribozymes. The HDV ribozyme employs a metal-ion bound hydroxide as a specific base and the protonated form of C75 as a general acid catalyst. The glmS ribozyme appears to employ the protonated form of GlcN6P as a general acid. The nucleobase of G40 might function as a general base catalyst.
