Filled circles represent the cases, empty circles represent the controls, and a line joins the cases and controls in each matched stratum. Boxes surround the specimens pooled. There are 8 strata with 1:1 case-control matching, 4 strata with 2:2 matching and 4 strata with 2:3 matching. One pool of size g = 4 and two pools of size g = 2 are formed for the 1:1 matched strata. Two pools each of size g = 2 are formed for the 2:2 and 2:3 matched strata.
