Effect of algae extracts on clotting times. For RT, the extracts of algae (50 μg/mL) were preincubated with plasma and then CaCl₂ was added to trigger coagulation. For PT, extracts (100 μg/mL) were incubated with plasma and then thromboplastin was added to induce coagulation. For aPTT, extracts (100 μL/mL) were incubated with plasma plus cephalin then CaCl2 was added to trigger coagulation. For FC, extracts (100 μg/mL) were incubated with fibrinogen and then thrombin (1 U/mL) was added to induce coagulation. Results are expressed as means ± SEM of two individual experiments (n = 4). Asterisk used when p < 0.05 compared to NaCl or DMSO (1% v/v). See Table 3 for species names.
