Defective RecA56 and RecA1 proteins do not promote DNA strand exchange in trans. Presynaptic filaments were assembled by incubation of RecA wild type (●), RecA56 (█), or RecA1 protein (▴; 1.3 μm, for each protein) with ssDNA (#43; 4 μm) under standard conditions. For each filament, DNA strand exchange in trans was initiated by addition of a pair of mutually homologous DNA substrates: dsDNA (#5 and #6; 8 μm) and 32P-labeled ssDNA (#5; 4 μm).
