Filter papers spotted with blood from a single patient sample infected with Plasmodium falciparum were added directly to the PCR master mix (blue) or washed first (red). Filter papers spotted with uninfected blood and added directly to the master mix serve as the negative control (gray). Samples were tested in triplicate.
