Mean (±1 SD) heart rate every 5 s for two inbred (Fischer and Buffalo) and one outbred strain of rats (n = 6 rats in each strain), 30 s before, during, and 30 s after forced submergence. The mean is for a total of three repeated forced dives performed on different days. One Fischer and one Buffalo rat completed only one dive experiment which they lost their ECG electrodes, and their data are included. Solid and dotted vertical lines are the mean dive duration for each of the strains.
