Fig. 5

Representative extra-thick (hypertrophy) noradrenergic TH immunoreactive fibers and the overall distribution of noradrenergic TH immunoreactive fibers in rat neocortex. A few extra-thick TH immunoreactive fibers (linked to Cy3; pointed by thick white arrow in A1) in all rats especially CTM exposed rats are noted to co-express DBH immunoreactivity (linked to Cy2, see A2). The merged image is shown in A3. For comparison, thin white arrows point to regular fine noradrenergic TH immunoreactive fibers. Interestingly, clusters of fine caliber noradrenergic TH immunoreactive fibers exhibit beaded appearance in some CTM exposed animals (pointed by yellow arrows). The merged image is shown in B3. Schematic diagrams illustrating the overall distributions of noradrenergic TH immunoreactive fibers among the three groups are shown in C1, C2, and C3. Note especially, the clustering of noradrenergic TH immunoreactive fibers in the CTM exposed animals. Scale bar in B3 applies to all the color photos.
