Oxygen consumption (VO₂) in Phox2b^+/+ and Phox2b^+/− pups exposed to hypoxia (10% O₂, shaded) at 33°C [(A,B) Phox2b^+/+: n = 8 and Phox2b^+/−: n = 5] and at 26°C [(C,D) Phox2b^+/+: n = 10 and Phox2b^+/−: n = 17). Values are absolute levels (A,C) and relative changes from pre-hypoxic levels (B,D). Regardless of temperature, hypoxia depresses VO₂ in both genotype groups. At 33°C, the drop in VO₂ is larger in Phox2b^+/− pups. At 26°C, the VO₂ response to hypoxia is markedly altered in Phox2b^+/− compared to Phox2b^+/+ pups. Values indicate means ± SEM for each group.
