Example of triggering swallow during repetitive cough (12, 13). Swallows occur during the cough E2 phase and result in its prolongation. Cough was induced by mechanical stimulation of the intrathoracic trachea. Swallow was initiated by transient infusion of water into the pharynx. Thin bar beneath PES trace-cough stimulus, thick bar beneath PES trace-swallow stimulus, TH-thyropharyngeus muscle EMG, GH-geniohyoid muscle EMG, ADD-adductor (thyroarytenoid) EMG, TA-transversus abdominis EMG, PS-parasternal EMG.
